Cyberpunk 2077 hype and hysteria is at an all-time high now that were finally in launch week (it'll be released in 3 days time at the time of writing) and seems to be the cause of medium to high-end GPUs being sold out around the world.
The company who have created and developed the game, which was first announced in 2013, are CD Project Red, a gaming company based in Poland.
They really got noticed because of a game called the Witcher 3 which came out in 2015.
Two previous games in the series came out in 2007 and 2011 and with each new release, the games just got better and better.
Witcher 3 is a defining game in the RPG, open-world genre, and it set a very high bar for RPG games from other companies to meet.
So, based on how good that game was and was received, gamers have been wetting themselves in anticipation of their newest game - Cyberpunk 2077.
This world is a complete departure from the Swords & Sorcery genre that Witcher 3 is based in.
Instead, Cyberpunk 2077 is a game set in a dystopian near future that could be where our own world is headed.
The game is based on the Cyberpunk and Cyberpunk 2020 RPGs (old-style table-top games) created by Mike Pondsmith.
Much of cyberpunk is rooted in the New Wave science fiction movement of the 1960s and 1970s, with writers like Philip K. Dick, Roger Zelazny, John Brunner, J. G. Ballard, Philip José Farmer and Harlan Ellison
They examined the impact of drug culture, technology, and the sexual revolution while avoiding the utopian tendencies of earlier science fiction, and later science fiction like Star Trek.
In fact, my old pal, Michael Carroll is now one of the main writers for Judge Dredd stories in 2000AD ! 🙂
But it was William Gibson's Hugo, Nebula, and Philip K. Dick Award-winning novel, Neuromancer, published in 1984, that moved cyberpunk from just being one aspect of science fiction into its own distinct subgenre.
And let's not forget about the Dredd movie in 2012.
Keanu Reeves has appeared in both Mnemonic and the Matrix franchise which might explain why he also has a part to play in Cyberpunk 2077 - no spoilers there as his involvement was revealed in game trailers.
The Cyberpunk world may be new and strange to you.
And, if you're planning on picking up a copy of Cyberpunk 2077, it's worth your while to delve into cyberpunk mythology and lore so that you have a far better understanding of the world you'll find yourself in.
So to help you with that, here's a 2-part series that looks at everything from the inception of cyberpunk to the world portrayed in Cyberpunk 2077 and the events that led to the shaping of that world:
